A recession is a period of economic decline when GDP growth is negative, prices for goods increase, unemployment rises, business stop expanding and standard of living falls. During a recession when thousands of people are being laid off from their jobs, you must know the ways and means to survive your respective job.

Stop Whining

There is absolutely no complaining allowed during tough economic times like these. No one likes a whiner during times of hardship or during times of prosper. Those who do complain are usually the first ones to get a pink slip. While you’re at it, do not participate in the office gossip. Listen to everything but keep your mouth shut!

Stay Visible

Do you telecommute? People who work from home are not front of mind with their managers and have a higher chance of being handed a pink slip. Stop working from home and get to the office everyday to get the important face time you need to stay front of mind. It’s also worth noting that you should try to get to work before your manager does and stay 15 minutes after they leave.

Nurture your Skills

During tough times, it is essential for employees to enhance their skills and marketability so that they can live up to the requirement of their industry. Supplement your educational degrees with higher an online degree or certificates, so that you become indispensable for your organization. Identify your strengths and work hard to improve them.
