So you’re searching for a new part-time job? Great! But once you find the job you want, you may be facing some stiff competition. Recently, CNN reported that 1,200 people at a job fair applied for 150 jobs at a new Kohl’s store. How do you stand out in the crowd? Here are a few job tips to keep in mind.
1. Hiring doesn’t always happen quickly. Even if a job posting says “HIRING NOW!” it may take 2-3 weeks to set up an interview and then another few weeks- or even a month—before you hear that you’re hired. Don’t let the hiring manager forget you! Follow up with a thank-you note or email. Ask them about the best way to stay in touch.
2. You can get or lose the job without saying a word. In an interview, body language is just as important as the words that come out of your mouth. Try to appear calm, friendly and open. Crossing your arms makes you appear defensive. Repeatedly touching your face or letting hair hang over your eyes can give the impression that you’re insecure. Tapping your foot or clicking a pen is just plain annoying. Before you embark on your job search, practice interviewing with a friend or in front of a mirror.
3. Interviews go both ways. You’ll probably be interviewing with a manager and possibly an assistant manager. While you’re trying to impress them in the interview, ask yourself: do the managers impress you? Ask thoughtful questions about the job and see how they answer. Pay attention to their personalities and how you feel around them, because you’ll be happiest in your new job if you like your coworkers.
Good luck finding a part-time job!
