With Halloween just days away, and a new report recently released by CareerBuilder, we thought it was time to post the Top 10 Scariest Jobs in America for your spooktacular viewing pleasure.

1. Bomb Squad Technician— Bomb Squad Technicians are specialized Law Enforcement Officers who disarm bombs before they detonate. These jobs are both hourly and salary with the average pay range between $22-$40,000 according to the BLS.

2. High Rise Window Washer— With the average salary of $21,000 it’s not enough for most people to want to dangle off the edge of a building with two wires. Save this hourly job for thrill seekers that also want to earn some extra money.

3. Armed Forces— An Army of One! Be all you can be! Joining the armed forces is not for everyone. This scary job is not for those afraid of things that literally go boom in the night.

4. Miner— A miner’s salary of $56k a year is enough for many people to overcome their fear of small tight places. For most people it will never be enough as the recent news of the mining tragedy at Upper Big Branch in West VA remains fresh in many people’s memory.

5. Police Officer— With an average salary of $39k most people would rather not become a police officer these days. Long hours, late night hours, working on the holiday and the list goes on. Police Officers are brave individuals and is only reserved for those who think of others before thinking of themselves.

6. Alaskan Crab Fishing— When you think of Alaskan crab fishing most people think of the tv show deadliest catch. You only have to watch the show once to realize that these people have one scary job. From being constantly cold, wet and away from home this is one scary job most people would rather skip and find work elsewhere.

7. Mortician— Morticians earn an average of $52k a year. That’s pretty good pay until you realize that a mortician works with the non-living. According to the BLS, job opportunities should be good, particularly for those who also embalm. No thank you.

8. Firefighter— Everyone dreams of one day wearing a fireman’s uniform and fighting fires with great bravery. These brave souls rush into burning buildings and save lives without thinking of themselves. All for an average of $38k a year. God bless our firefighters!

9. High School Teacher— Teachers earn on average $43k according to SimplyHired.com. People define scary in different ways. Fear of pay cuts received the most votes, with 13 percent. Nine percent of workers said workload and presenting in front of other people makes a job scary. Being a Teacher comes in at number 9!

10. Cemetery Worker— Yeah, this should be in the Top 10 Scariest Jobs in America. Remember the old joke about how many dead people are in the cemetery? The answer is all of them. That’s scary to me and to most people who would rather not earn an average of $32k a year working as a cemetery caretaker.

If you’re one of the 14 million American unemployed, the holiday season is welcome news.

Halloween which is right around the corner marks the official beginning of the holiday season – and the holiday hiring season.

A recent survey polled 1,000 hiring managers and found that…

51% of hiring managers will be hiring for seasonal jobs this this year – up 8 points since 2008.
Each hiring manager, on average, expects to hire 4.1 seasonal workers – a 5 percent increase over last year’s 3.9 workers and a 32 percent improvement from a low point in 2009.

So if you want a seasonal job, apply now.

For example, Shutterfly, an online photo-sharing service, announced last week that it’s looking for 1,300 seasonal employees for $9 to $12.50 an hour. Retail giant Toys R Us is looking for a whopping 40,000 seasonal/hourly employees.

Seasonal Jobs Hiring Now

Publix just announced it’s hiring 500 seasonal employees for 21 of its stores in Southwest Florida.

Zappos has begun taking applications for 3,000 temporary jobs at its Shepherdsville fulfillment center. The pay for these hourly jobs start at $8.25 per hour for first shift and $9.00 for second shift.

Macy’s a large retailer recently announced that it plans to hire 78,000 temporary workers for the holiday season. Macy’s said this is an increase of 4% from last year, when the retailer hired 75,000 seasonal jobs. These seasonal hourly jobs are to staff Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s stores, call centers, distribution centers and warehouses that store products for online shipping. Most of the seasonal positions are part-time, with evening, weekend and overnight shifts required. The company said these temporary jobs can lead to year-round jobs “in some cases.”

Best Buy will add 15,000 hourly associates (Blue Shirts) while their phone support and distribution centers will add more than 3,000 hourly employees to provide customer support, and manage inventory for our stores and .com channel. These seasonal hires are in addition to the 200 permanent full-time employees that they are adding to their IT team, which were announced several weeks ago.

Seasonal Jobs at Shutterfly

The holiday season is right around the corner and we just got wind that Shutterfly has plans to fill about 600 seasonal jobs. This is an increase of about 100 hourly employees when compared to 2010.

Shutterfly pays in the range of $9 to $12.50 per hour. If you want to earn an extra $1 per hour you can volunteer for the weekend shift. A retention plan/bonus has also been put into place for hourly employees with exemplary attendance records.

Shutterfly requires that each employee have at least a high-school diploma to be eligible for these seasonal jobs. On the job training is provided so don’t worry if you don’t have any digital-press, photo or bindery work experience.

Employment background checks are simply scary! Today, employers are performing background checks on potential employees at an alarming rate. Do you know what an employment background check will reveal about you?

Don’t think that just because your a teen looking for a part time job or a college student looking for that next summer job that an employer isn’t going to perform a background check on you. In fact, you might be at a higher risk of having a background check performed on you since you are younger.

Have you had a recent background check and do you know what a background check would reveal about you?

Once you are really close to being hired, an employer will request a background check on you. Even someone who is a model citizen can get really nervous when it comes to an employment background check. It’s the uncertainty of not knowing if something bad stands between you and your next dream job. For applicants that have a slightly tarnished work history or even problems with car loans, depending on what it actually reveals you may be able to relax. For others it could mean that you don’t get offered the job.

What does a typical background check include?

A basic background check confirms who you are. It confirms your Social Security Number, while someone looking for a high-level security clearance could include an investigator who visits your friends and acquaintances to grill them about the only subject they have in common: you.

In most cases, background checks include:

Employment history– other companies you worked for and dates.
Financial history– credit score, bankruptcies, tax liens etc.
Criminal history– if you’ve been to court then it will probably be revealed.

So what won’t be included?

Military service records

Without your written consent, an employer cannot access the information mentioned above. Just be forewarned: you may be asked to allow them to research it. It’s information that could be relevant to the job so an employer will likely ask if they can get access to it.

What can you do to improve your chances of employment?

Do your homework– You can order a background check on yourself for between $20 and $50. Seeing the results before an employer does gives you a chance to prepare for questions from your employer, as well as confirming that all of the information it contains is correct. Background checks aren’t 100% accurate, so be sure to review the information with a fine tooth comb.
Don’t like what you see?– Don’t fret. Even if you think your background check would disqualify you for certain job openings, that knowledge can help you focus on the jobs that’s a better fit for you. Never give up hope and always think positive. Once you land your next job concentrate on building a solid employment background that will eventually help get you to your dream job!

This week’s big employment news came from the labor department. Unexpectedly the unemployment rate had little change in July and held at 9.1% and nonfarm payroll rose by 117,000. Jobs added to the economy were in health care, retail, manufacturing and mining. Government jobs provided no help at all as employment for the government continued to trend down.

Social Media Background Checks

When you are looking for a job, you would expect your prospective employer to do a background check, but how prepared are you for a social media background check? Employment Attorney Denise Wheeler says, like a credit check, the Federal Trade Commission has granted 3rd party companies permission to search social media sites as a part of background checks for their clients. Companies can go back several years to find information about you. Wheeler said everyone who has concerns should make sure to check the privacy settings on their accounts.

Amazon.com Opening Fulfillment Center on Lebanon, TN

Amazon.com is planning to open a 500,000 square foot fulfillment center in Lebanon, TN. In terms of employment, they are promising to create hundreds of full-time and seasonal jobs before the end of 2011. This brings the total number of Amazon facilities to three and are expected to create 1,200 new full-time jobs. Full-time hourly openings include roles in picking, packing and receiving/shipping. Management roles include positions in operations, safety, human resources and technical support.

Microsoft’s Gates says high school degree no longer enough

Westchester gets $1.1 million for summer jobs

County Executive Robert Astorino announced today that the county has received a $1.1 million grant from the New York State Department of Labor to help local businesses provide summer jobs to about 400 youth ages 14 to 21. This latest grant is in addition to $392,000 in funding provided by the New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance to provide summer employment for more than 300 youth, ages 14 to 18, who are eligible under the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. McDonald’s is Now Hiring 50k Hourly Workers

McDonald’s announced today that on April 19th they will be hiring 50,000 hourly workers. These McJobs are for hourly crew members and management positions that are both full-time and part-time jobs. McDonald’s currently has over 14,000 fast food restaurants all across the U.S.A.

The average hourly pay for these jobs are expected to be $8.30 an hour. Currently the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour so McDonald’s is paying more than $1 per hour above minimum wage. Restaurant managers working in a McDonald’s can make $50,000 a year.

Daimler: 10,000 new jobs worldwide in 2011

Time to brush up on your German speaking skills. Daimler Chrysler has just announced plans to hire more than 10,000 employees worldwide in 2011. 4,000 of these new jobs will be in Germany alone. 6,700 skilled workers and approximately 700 graduates will be recruited directly all over the world. The Group is also focusing on gaining talent for the future: As well as taking on approximately 1,900 apprentices, Daimler is also offering positions for 600 trainees in its CAReer trainee program and for more than 200 students at the ‘Duale Hochschule’. Most of those positions will be offered in Germany.

As of December 31, 2010, the Daimler Group employed 260,100 people worldwide, thereof 164,000 in Germany. This was 3,700 more worldwide and 1,500 more in Germany than a year before. With regard to the overall workforce development in the year 2011, Daimler assumes that the number of employees worldwide will increase slightly.
