It’s been several years since we’ve been able to say anything positive about summer jobs. It’s been reported that not only will there be more hourly summer jobs available in 2011, but the summer jobs available will actually pay more per hour.
A new summer jobs press release published by SnagAJob.com is reporting that more than half of the hiring managers (55%) surveyed said they plan to hire hourly workers for a variety of summer jobs. That’s the highest percentage since SnagAJob started the survey four years ago. As a side note. Some companies refer to summer jobs as seasonal jobs. What we’re referring to in this article is jobs held during the summer months that are temporary.
More Hiring, More Money
- 10% of hiring managers said they will be hiring more seasonal staff than last summer, up from 6% in 2010.
- Summer jobs in 2011 will pay better too. Of those surveyed, Hiring managers said they plan to dish out $10.90 an hour. That’s about a 7% increase over last summer’s $10.20 per hour.

If you’re in the market for a summer job you had better already be knee deep in your job search. According to Shawn Boyer of SnagAJob.com, 43% of hiring managers that plan to staff up for their summer job openings say they plan to be finished hiring by April.
- Hiring managers told SnagAJob.com that 65% of the staff will likely be workers returning from last summer, and 35% will be new employees.
- Competition for summer jobs will remain fierce. To get a leg up, hiring managers said that a positive attitude was the most important attribute in a job candidate, followed by the ability to work within a schedule and previous experience.
The survey also asked companies to share some of their best job advice. Among the comments: “communicate what you can contribute to the job,” “Do your own research on the prospective employer” and “remove piercings/hide tattoos.”
