How to Dress for a Job Interview

If you don’t think what you wear to a job interview is important, you need to think again! It doesn’t matter if it is your first interview or your third. The impression that you give in each interview can make or break you when the interviewer is deciding whether or not to hire you for the job.

Just because you have an outfit that is stylish does not mean it is proper interview attire. Here are some tips for both men and women. Remember though, to make sure that you are well groomed and fresh for this job interview! It wouldn’t matter if you showed up in a suit or dress if you haven’t showered in a few days or haven’t brushed your hair!

MEN:

  • If possible, wear a suit and tie (dark colors are best). If you do not own a suit or sports coat, wear well-ironed dress pants, a button down long sleeve dress shirt, and a tie.
  • Polished, conservative dress shoes
  • No visible body piercings
  • Keep facial hair to a minimum and neatly trimmed
  • Very minimal jewelry
  • Empty your pockets so you don’t jingle

WOMEN:

  • If possible, wear a suit (dark colors are best). If you do not own a suit, wear a knee length dress skirt and a button up conservative blouse.
  • Polished pump shoes – no strappy sandals
  • Conservative hosiery, nude colored if possible
  • No visible body piercings
  • Very minimal jewelry
  • Minimal makeup – nothing over the top!
  • Go easy on the perfume -don’t give your interviewer a headache!

Remember also not to be chewing on gum and do not come to the interview smelling like cigarettes if you smoke.

If you follow these basic guidelines, you will enhance your chances of appearing professional and of making a great impression on your interviewer. Dress for success and the job could be yours!
