5 Reasons to be Thankful for Your Hourly Job

This Thanksgiving season, we thought we’d focus on a little gratitude of our own. So before you dig in to the turkey, stuffing, and green bean casserole, consider these 5 reasons to be grateful for your hourly career:

  1. If you work overtime, you probably get paid for it (not so for many salaried employees – just ask them).
  2. You can control your hours a bit, even if you’re full time (Can’t do that 5-9pm shift this Thursday? Trade it out for the 7–noon shift).
  3. Your schedule probably varies enough that you sometimes see daylight from November – March (Ask your salaried friends – they probably go to work in the dark and come home in the dark).
  4. If you need extra money for the holidays, you can probably request more hours and accomplish that. Salaried employees are locked in to set hours and pay, and may need to apply for that second (hourly) part time job to earn extra holiday cash!
  5. Do you need to do your own holiday shopping? From buying the turkey and trimmings to holiday gift shopping, an hourly employee is more likely to avoid the weekend madness. Why are the weekends “mad?” Because all of your salaried friends are locked into a Monday – Friday work schedule. Hourly employees are more likely to work some on the weekends, which equals days off during the week, so you can shop in peace on a Tuesday afternoon – now THAT is something to be grateful for!

So as you consider what you’re thankful for – whether it be loving family, good health, or supportive friends, don’t forget your hourly job! In today’s economy, having a job is reason enough to be happy. However, when you consider all the positives to hourly employment, you’ll have a real reason to be grateful.

Happy Thanksgiving!
